چکیده

The microbiologic flora of the intestine of the breast-fed infant is characterized by the predominance of Lactobacillus bifidus. Investigations of the factors responsible for the establishment of this organism in the intestine of the nursling have been hampered by the lack of suitable isolation and cultivation procedures. Recently Norris et al. (1950) described a semisynthetic medium, supplemented with most of the factors known to stimulate the growth of lactobacilli, that will support the growth of L. bifidus indefinitely in the bifid phase. In the present study, the growth stimulatory activity of each of the constituents of this medium was investigated in order to determine the minimal requirements of these organisms. A knowledge of these requirements may offer an explanation of the unique predominance of L. bifidus in the nursling's intestine.

The nutrition of variants of Lactobacillus bifidus.

The bacterial flora of the intestine of an infant that is being fed human milk is characterized by the predominance of a lactobacillus whose distinctive morphology of rods, clubs, and bifid forms has given it the name of Lactobacitlus biJidus (l-3). The possible importance of this intestinal organism to the health of the infant makes its study one of practical significance. Since its discovery ...

Comparative Studies in the Manufacturing of Acidophilus, Bifidus and Acido-bifidus Milks

These products contain Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium spp., respectively, that are known as probiotic microoganisms. In this study, some aspects of acidity development, pH measurement and bacterial counts were monitored when these micro-org...

Occurrence of mucoid variants of Lactobacillus bifidus; demonstration of extracellular and intracellular polysaccharide.

A mucoid variant of Lactobacillus bifidus was first described byIMalyoth and Bauer (1950, 1951). Colonies of this variant incubated anaerobically on solid media were said to be hygroscopic and to become watery on exposure to atmospheric conditions at room temperature. In the first paper, attempts to demonstrate capsules by staining and by suspension in India ink were reported as unsuccessful. I...
